Sonnet-ish

I was wondering if tonight,
you might sleep beside me.
I’d like to feel you close and hear your breath,
and know you chose to be beside me.
And when the baby wakes in the night,
I want you to wake up, too,
to pet her back. To hear her cry,
milk. Milk.
I’ve never believed that you love me,
not truly. Not for more than a moment.
I know you know my love,
the full weight of that gift,
heralded onto you

half promise, half threat.
